Weave News: Director of Operations

Weave News is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our international team as the Director of Operations. The ideal candidate is a creative self-starter with excellent time management, administrative, and human relations skills and a strong interest in contributing directly to the day-to-day work and ongoing development of our growing organization.  

About Weave News: Weave News is an online, independent, grassroots media organization. We believe in journalism’s fundamental importance for democracy. Unfortunately, the content produced by establishment and corporate media outlets is too often framed in ways that reflect the interests of powerful elites, and this weakens journalism’s democratic function. For this reason, our work is grounded in the concept of citizen journalism: the belief that ordinary people can play important roles in the creation of a more democratic media system and a more just world by becoming actively involved in the production, circulation, and analysis of news and information.

Position Description: As the Director of Operations at Weave News, you will be instrumental in orchestrating the seamless operation of our organization. The core of this role is facilitating collaboration within and across the various teams that make up Weave News. You will manage digital resources, internal communications, and calendars, ensuring that these tools and processes are effectively maintained for the day-to-day work of the organization. This essential behind-the-scenes role is central to enabling efficient collaboration and professionalism, empowering every member of the organization to contribute effectively to our mission. 

Terms: This position will be unpaid, remote, and will require approximately 10 hours of work per week. We are open to offering this position for course credit or experiential learning. Depending on experience and budgetary capacity, it may be possible to fill this position on a paid, contract basis for a minimum of four (4) months from the determined start date, with the opportunity to extend. 

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and regularly update access to our Google Drive, Slack, and Trello spaces while keeping these spaces efficiently organized. 

  • Serve on the organization’s Leadership Committee, which engages in weekly cross-functional management discussions to help steer our day-to-day operations. As we move toward independent, nonprofit status, you may also have the opportunity to liaise with the organization’s Advisory Board. 

  • Oversee the scheduling of Leadership Committee, all-staff, and other organizational meetings as assigned. Attend all-staff meetings. Manage and circulate meeting agendas and notes. Participate in meeting facilitation when needed. 

  • Maintain and update all onboarding materials for the organization and facilitate the onboarding of new staff members. 

  • Assist other members of the staff with some basic budgetary tasks. 

  • Maintain consistent and professional communication via Slack.

Qualifications:

  • Required: 1-2 years of experience working in an administrative or organizational role. This includes managing tasks such as coordination, communication, resource management in any professional setting.

  • Preferred: Experience in fields such as  advocacy, nonprofits, media production, or other collaborative, organizational settings. This may include previous involvement with Weave News. 

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Experience with Google Drive (essential), Slack and Trello (preferred)

  • High energy, motivated, and looking to gain hands-on experience with a dynamic and growing organization

  • Flexible, organized, and open minded

  • Culturally sensitive with a deep understanding of Weave News’ mission and ability to work productively in a team environment with individuals from diverse backgrounds and geographic locations.
